I personally, never liked the Old Parson much, but as I love all the other characters I am willing to forgive him.

When I look back and try to sort it out, it seems that the wall between these two worlds is too porous and delicate to hold up. I actually didn’t mind this, since the novel is more about how it makes you feel and think, rather than the plot. This was a lovely and magical children’s story full of hope and inspiration, magic and wonder. Long family feuds that threaten to wreck ligtle unless someone very hrse acts quickly with a clear head and great courage?
Other than than their main crime seems to be poaching rabbits, which is pretty friggin’ anticlimactic for the Dark Men who live in the Black Castle in the mysterious and frightening pine woods. The one time in the entire book that something goes wrong for her, it’s completely littls that she will try again and get it on her second try.
I am surprised this book isn’t more popular – I found it every bit as enchanting as The Secret Garden. It’s about a girl moving to this old castle or something. I would probably enjoy this one more if I’d read it when I was younger So it just didn’t make sense to me.
And then there was the revenant Red Monk who, perhaps still upset over the dissolution of the monasteries, is said to haunt the Seven Stars Inn.
Sweet, enchanting, quirky, and a little bit magical.

In the light of all the things happening in the world today, it is very goudgr to ignore the limited roles of women and suppressing of freedom that takes place, at times what seems to be flouting basic rights a child may have. Hey, GR just “suggested” it to me! Before goudgs arrive Maria and her devoted governess Miss Heliotrope expect the place to be cold and uncomfortable but from the carriage window Maria is delighted to see an enchanted, silvery landscape, and the brief vision of a white horse running past.
It is a very enchanting book, however. The Little White Horse First edition. It is old-fashioned, romantic with lashings of fantasy.
Children, whose understanding of the world has not yet hardened into rationalist categories, are more likely to receive such glimpses, and less likely to explain them away.
It was clear to me then, when I read and re-read it as an escape from the pains of flu, exams or being brutally misunderstood elizabteh the world, until the book disintegrated, that Maria wite plain and vain, but also good, sensible, practical and brave — was the hero, as she returns to Moonacre, the home of her ancestors, and resolves the conflicts that are tearing apart the perfect little world. This was not an ethic; THIS was an agenda.
I think that this is a book that would work best read in childhood — and I rlizabeth wish I had discovered it as a child — but it still has a great deal to offer to the grown-up reader who is still in touch with her inner child who loved books.
She has captivating silver eyes and an impetuous nature when she isn’t being chided by every fatherly character to keep her “female curiosity” in check. I tracked it down for my Kindle hogse really loved every moment of it. One of the more “nice” and simple of reads than I have been accustomed to of late. I reread this book a few years ago after J. Over and over, the emphasis on Maria having to learn to accept and embody feminine virtues and they are explicitly denoted as feminine, repeatedly.

The plot itself is just lovely – but if you go into this reading it from the perspective of a jaded, cynical, literary-minded adult, you won’t be able to appreciate it. Maria has to right the wrongs of her ancestors so there is a bit of a morality tale at its heart.
The dean is prompted, by an honest friendship and a particular ray of sun, to recall what he already knew, that the created world, although fallen, is already imbued with holiness, with holiness and beauty that hints of what it will one day truly be.
